Welcome to Heartful Psychotherapy

I provide a professional and confidential space to explore any difficulties in your life, to learn to connect with yourself and those you love more fully, and to find a greater sense of presence and joy in your life.

Thank you for finding your way to Heartful Psychotherapy

My name is Sarah Malyon. I am a fully UKCP registered Integrative

Psychotherapist. UKCP provide the gold standard for psychotherapy and counselling quality and assurance.

In addition to private practice, I have over 20 years NHS experience offering psychotherapy and counselling in Nottingham.

How can psychotherapy with me help you?

Sometimes people come for psychotherapy because of a specific difficulty or set of circumstances. Perhaps something has happened in your life which has left you uncertain, lacking in confidence or shaken.

Equally, it may not be clear to you what support is needed or why. You may be feeling low or anxious despite conditions in your life being seemingly favourable. Often we unknowingly add to our struggles by layering guilt or shame onto the feelings and circumstances we are experiencing. In this way, we can get `stuck’ in repeated patterns or cycles of thinking and relating. Psychotherapy with me can offer you the support to find your way out, and to guide you towards a direction of agency and hopefulness within your life.

My experience and specialist areas:

I have worked in a range of settings, including Statutory NHS Mental Health Services, Local Authority Looked After and Adult Care Services, Voluntary Sector Services including a Retreat Centre, Staff Wellbeing, Private Psychotherapy Practice and in a hospice.

I am also currently involved in research through the University of Cambridge looking into the efficacy of mindfulness for carers with low mood.

I have extensive psychotherapist experience helping with all the following areas:

  • Anxiety/Stress/Burn Out
  • Low Mood/Depression
  • Trauma
  • Shame
  • Loneliness
  • Life transitions and loss brought about through illness, divorce, changes in family circumstances, job pressures or bereavement
  • Anger and Frustration
  • Feeling `stuck’
  • Relational issues
  • Pressures associated with caring responsibilities
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Using mindfulness to support awareness, self compassion and change.
  • Working with neurodiversity
  • Positive and welcoming around diversity in all its forms

What is my approach?

My core qualification is in Integrative Psychotherapy. This means that we will work together to integrate and unite the different elements of your affective, cognitive, behavioural and physiological states. We all have different parts of ourselves which have developed through our lives. Sometimes, these parts are not working well together, or do not serve us as well as we would like in the present day. Integrative Psychotherapy looks to our whole experience, seeking to make sense of it, and freeing us to move forwards intentionally and with kindness towards ourselves and towards others.

I am qualified in several evidence based interventions in addition to Integrative Psychotherapy. These include qualifications in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and more detailed below.

All our counselling work will take place within a context of relational attunement, empathy, non- judgement and compassion. Psychotherapy with me will offer you the space to be fully seen and heard. It will allow you to connect with who you really are, and to begin to thrive both within yourself and in the world.

My qualifications and continued professional development (CPD):

  • BA (Hons) Social Policy and Administration (Nottingham University)
  • MA Social Work (Nottingham University)
  • Post Graduate Diploma Integrative Psychotherapy (Birmingham University)

Fees & availability

Fees: My charge is £60 per session. On the basis of having a strong ethical foundation, I also offer a limited number of subsidised places at £40 per session for those who would otherwise be unable to attend psychotherapy.

Who I work with?: I am offering individual sessions to adults. In exceptional circumstances, I may consider offering sessions with 16-18 year olds.

Where am I based?: My psychotherapy practice is close to Nottingham city centre, just off Mansfield Road in the Mapperley Park area. It can be accessed by several major bus routes and has free parking nearby. I can also offer `walk and talk’ sessions, and if we agree to do this, we will go ahead regardless of the weather conditions on that day.

Session structure and duration

The first session is 60 minutes and is a no obligation assessment for you to see if you would like to work with me, and for me to see if I am the most suitable therapist to support you. If we agree after that to work together, subsequent sessions are 50 minutes and will usually be at a regular time. I charge for both the initial session and for any subsequent sessions which are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.

I have high ethical standards in regards to the duration of psychotherapy, and will not encourage you to be in therapy for any longer than is necessary and helpful to you. It might be that you have a specific difficulty that we could focus on with short term work (4-10 sessions). It may be that you want to explore your understanding of yourself in more depth, in which case we will work longer term. This may be 6 months or more, with regular reviews to ensure your needs continue to be met. I will support you to make a decision about the duration of psychotherapy, which is right for you and your circumstances.
